The first revised TOGAF 9 specification has been issued as from 1st December. This is the very first revision since TOGAF 9 was released in 2009.
So, TOGAF is now at version 9.1 with overall, some 450 alterations that have attempted to deal with the 400 or so feedback comments from Enterprise Architects in the field.
This new release ensures downward compatibility to the TOGAF 9.0 certifications and specifications.
Although there are quite a few changes, essentially there are no core differences in the specific features or direction with this version. However, we do see a definite refinement and improvement of the current framework.
Was it a good idea to implementt this new version?
Many specialists are of the view that inconsistencies and even mistakes are inevitable. The Open Group, like any other standards organisation, consists of many individuals and organisations each with differing motivations. And the view is that this is bound to cause anomalies.
However, the Open Group is now realising that they need to be more responsive and flexible with their new versions and perhaps, in this case, not sit back and wait for a decrease in interest for TOGAF 10.
A member of the TOGAF Architecture Forum has recently commented that the new edition has provided improvements that will make the standard more relevant to Enterprise Architects. It should help with their daily EA tasks. Also, the increased level of consistency has been enhanced as a result of input from all members.
TOGAF certification is still considered as an important requirement for the professional Enterprise Architect.
This new version offers some important changes that will be generally welcomed by many and, no doubt, improvements will continue to be made in the future.
